Billed as three days of technology immersion, Remix Hotel gives aspiring producers and artists a first hand opportunity to experience the best music creation tools and to learn from some of the leading dance and hip hop producers. Emmy nominated producer DJ Johnny Juice joined Cakewalk for two talks over the weekend. In his first, he gave an in depth look at the SONAR production skills he used for recent recordings with Public Enemy, The BaNNed, and Ali Raps a film about Muhammad Ali, along wth his usual colorful commentary on life, the music industry, and everything else. Juice's first talk was written about indepth on the Remix NYC website, check it out here. In his second appearance, Juice remixed a Public Enemy song live on the fly, starting with just Chuck D and Flava Flav acapellas. To show everyone the true creative power of Project5 and SONAR, and also to convince everyone that the remix was not scripted, he let the audience call the shots for the remix. SONAR 6 production clinic with DJ Johnny Juice We recently discovered some video footage on YouTube of DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy giving a production clinic in the Cakewalk room at Remix Hotel NYC 2007. In his talk he discusses and shows examples of his production work using SONAR 6 for Public Enemy's remake of the James Brown classic hit Soul Power. Juice's talks are always entertaining, but please note this is a very casual talk to a hip hop audience and there are examples of explicit language. You can watch the videos below:
Pete Johnson, associate music director for CSI New York, held a frank conversation about getting your music aired in film and TV shows. In addition to his work with CSI NY, Pete is an accomplished musician, songwriter, and producer with 3 songs in the Spiderman 3 underscore. Pete's conversation also covered scoring techniques in SONAR 6. We should have video from Pete's talk online soon, stay tuned.
Sharkey debuted material from Monster Maker, his new project with C-Rayz Walz which is set to drop this Summer. With production credits that include Grand Puba, Cannibal Ox, The Pharcyde, and Jean Grae, collaborations with Micky Petralia and Rick Rubin, and current work with Kanye West, Sharkey had a wealth of advice to give on producing your music in SONAR 6, and was also forthcoming with a advice on navigating your career as a producer and solo artist. Juice & Sharkey are close friends who collaborated on one song on the Monster Maker album. During his secong talk, Sharkey invited Johnny Juice up to discuss the SONAR mixing techniques that he used on the Monstermaker track.
