FAQ

Q: What processor should I choose: Intel or AMD?

A: There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Both Intel Pentium and Xeon processors and AMD Athlons and Opterons will work fine with our software. As with any hardware purchase, you should check for compatibility with third party software and hardware. Intel Celerons and AMD Durons will work, but have smaller cache sizes, and are not recommended.

Q: I have an IDE drive, is a serial ATA drive better?

A: A fast IDE drive will work well in most recording situations. If your motherboard supports the newer serial ATA technology, the additional data transfer speed will help provide even better audio recording and playback.

Q: Why should I buy or build a machine from someone you recommend as opposed to buying a Dell or a Compaq, etc.?

A: Brand name computers from companies like Dell or Compaq are usually great computers for the average user, but you can typically get better performance from a system that is specifically designed and pre-configured for recording digital audio.

Q: I want a system that my whole family can use; will it still work for my audio recording?

A: It will work, but performance and stability will be seriously compromised by the addition of non-music software and applications. We suggest a dedicated machine for recording digital audio.

Q: What is more important, more memory, a fast processor, or fast hard drives?

A: We would suggest getting the best of each within your budget, meaning that you shouldn't go out and buy the fastest processor available, and leave yourself with no money for a descent hard drive and sufficient amount of RAM.
