Precision M4500

Dell is a trusted name in the business workstation market, so it was no surprise when the M4500 proved to be a stable and competent performer. It comes loaded with the latest and greatest Intel i5 or i7 processors, ample memory, a spacious screen, and rendering house level graphics. If you're looking to replace your desktop without sacrificing performance this laptop may be for you.

The M4500 was a competent performer in all the tests we ran. Heavy projects proved to be no problem and editing was a breeze. While most users will use a mouse, we found the track pad to be very precise and more than adequate for working on your projects at your favorite coffee house or late night collaboration sessions at the rehearsal space.

The Precision M4500 is a high performance portable solution for recording and mixing within SONAR X1. It is not, however, the lightest laptop tested. You'll need a larger case and it does weight a bit more than your average laptop. If you are looking for an all-purpose machine you may want to consider a Dell consumer model, but if heavy DAW usage and productivity is your only necessity, you can't get much better.

Recommendations for DAW use:

  • We recommend the Core i7, as the added power is always welcome
  • While not as important as with most other laptops, when using it for recording be sure to turn off any unnecessary services and drivers such as Wi-Fi cards, Bluetooth adapters and network connections
