• "Cannot Load Audio Extension .DLL" Error Message

    Symptom
    You try to open Cakewalk Pro Audio, but you get an error message saying "Cannot Load Audio Extension .DLL."

    Causes
    There are two possible reasons for this:

    1. You changed the Cakewalk Pro Audio directory, and Cakewalk doesn't know where to find the .DLL files.
    2. You may have told Cakewalk to use hardware that isn't in your computer. For example, you may have gone to Tools | Audio Hardware and chosen "Session 8." However, if you don't have that hardware, Cakewalk can't communicate with it.

    What happens next is that you close Cakewalk, only to reopen it and get the above error message.

    Solution
    Find your CAKEWALK.INI file (it should be in your Cakewalk Pro Audio directory) and open it. Next, find the line that says "AudExtDLL," and change it to the following:

    [WinCake]
    AudExtDLL=C:\PROGRAM FILES\CAKEWALK PRO AUDIO\TTSAUD**.DLL

    where "TTSAUD**.DLL" is the correct extension for your hardware. If you have a generic windows sound card, for example, the correct extension is TTSAUDDX.DLL. You can choose one of five *.DLL extensions:

    TTSAUDDX.DLL - generic Windows sound cards
    TTSAUDS8.DLL - Digidesign Session 8
    TTSAUDA3.DLL - Digidesign Audiomedia III
    TTSAUDSS.DLL - Soundscape SSHDR 1
    TTSAUDV8.DLL - Digital Audio Labs V8

    Note: This example assumes Cakewalk is installed in ‘C:\Program Files\Cakewalk Pro Audio'. If you installed (or moved) Cakewalk in a different directory, make sure you specify the proper path.

    Once you've done the above step, you should be able to open Cakewalk again.
