Does Cakewalk Run on Windows NT?Cakewalk Versions 6.01 and later are fully Windows NT compatible. Upgrades are available from the Online Store or by calling our Sales line at 888-CAKEWALK. The 5.0 and 6.0 versions of Cakewalk are all 32-bit applications which run on Windows 95. Although many such applications also run on Windows NT, Cakewalk 5.0 and 6.0 do not. Many parts of Windows 9x itself remain 16-bit. This includes the multimedia subsystem and drivers for MIDI and audio devices. (Contrary to popular myth, there is no such thing as a "32-bit MIDI driver for Windows 95". MIDI drivers can be updated to support Windows 95 Plug and Play and the Device Manager tree, but the core MIDI driver code remains 16-bit.) For a variety of reasons, a Windows 95 application like Cakewalk 5.0 and 6.0 must use some 16-bit code to work with Windows 95's low-level MIDI and timer services. Otherwise, timing would be extremely poor and unreliable. As a result, Cakewalk versions 5.0 and 6.0 have been fine-tuned to work with Windows 95. The specific methods used are not supported by Windows NT. Back to index of technical articles.
